Profile

Most of what we are asked to fix was reasonable when it was written. Systems outlive their assumptions - the load changes, the team changes, the business changes - and what was a sensible shortcut becomes the thing nobody wants to touch.

We work across that whole range: designing new systems, modernising ones that have aged badly, and helping teams build the habits that stop the same thing happening again. Cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, API design, and the unglamorous discipline of clean interfaces and tests that mean something.

The work rewards people who think past the current sprint - who care what a system will be like to change in three years, and who can say why an approach is wrong without simply preferring their own.

This is an open application. You are not applying for a named position - you are telling us that this is the part of Volition you want to work in.

What you would work on

  • Architecture and design for systems that have to scale and keep being changed
  • Cloud-native development - containers, orchestration, and services that fail in survivable ways
  • API design and integration, where the contract matters more than the implementation behind it
  • Modernising legacy systems incrementally, without the big-bang rewrite that never lands
  • Full-stack work where the product needs it
  • Development practice: review, testing, and delivery habits that outlast any one engagement

Who tends to fit

Experience that lands well

  • Fluent Swedish and English
  • Real depth in at least one language - Java, Go, Python, C#, TypeScript, or similar - and the judgement to know it is not the only one
  • Distributed systems, and an honest understanding of what they cost
  • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and Kubernetes
  • API design, and experience of living with the ones you designed
  • Testing as part of how you build, not a phase afterwards

We are not counting years. Someone who has taken one system from design to production and stayed to maintain it has learned things a longer CV often has not.

Nice to have

  • Experience modernising something genuinely legacy, with the constraints that brings
  • Front-end depth as well as back-end
  • Writing or speaking about this work in public

Personal qualities

  • Problem solver: you like diagnosing complex issues and building elegant solutions
  • Communicator: you can explain technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Teacher: you enjoy mentoring and helping others grow
  • Curious: you stay current with emerging technologies and practices
  • Collaborative: you thrive in team environments and value diverse perspectives

What we offer you

We offer you a dedicated management team, with a solid engineering and software development background. We are all part of the delivery and still active as consultants. This means that we have a better understanding of both our customer’s unique situation and your situation as an employed consultant. Basically, we are a company by knowledge workers for knowledge workers, built on a foundation of knowledge, empathy, sharing, and fun.

We expect all employees to be part of this culture.

  • Willing to always learn something new and set knowledge into practice
  • Participation in our competence jam sessions, conferences, and trips
  • Willing to share, and spread positive energy

How an open application works

We recruit by expertise rather than by vacancy. Open applications go to the people who lead this area, they are read properly, and we come back to you - whether or not there is something to talk about immediately.

Tell us what you have built, what you would want to build here, and anything that shows how you think. A CV helps, but what you write matters more.

Sounds like a good match?
